What are Cookies? Why are Cookies needed?

A cookie is data stored on your computer when you use the Internet.

A session cookie is a cookie that is erased when you close your Web browser. The session cookie is stored in temporary memory and is not retained after the browser is closed. Session cookies do not collect information from your computer. They typically store information in the form of a session identification that does not personally identify you. A cookie cannot retrieve any other data from your hard drive, pass on computer viruses, or capture your email address.

In instances where a Web application has a time limit and/or there are multiple pages where you are entering information, browsers need to know that all of the pages within the application are actually part of one form. It does not save the information you are entering on your computer.

Are Cookies Safe?

Some people are nervous about cookies. Privacy is a valid issue for all of us. However cookies are very limited in scope. A cookie can only contain plain text, not code, so cannot spread computer viruses. They go into a specific folder or directory location that you control, via your web browser software. As a result, cookies can't read or write to arbitrary files or folders on your computer. Also, each cookie is limited to 1,024 characters, so contains very little information. Most cookies include expiration dates and those that don't, expire (and are deleted) as soon as you close your browser.

Web browsers give you the ability to disable cookies entirely so that no web server can read or write them. However, doing so will make many web sites (including ours) function improperly or not at all.

Can I enable Cookies for this site only?

Follow these steps to enable Cookies for this site only:
  1. In the browser window, from the "Tools" menu select "Internet Options," Select the "Privacy" tab.

Select the browser version you are using:

Internet Explorer Version 6.X
  1. In the Internet Explorer browser window, from the "Tools" menu select "Internet Options."
  2. Find the "Settings" section by reviewing the various tabs available (the tab names will vary in different releases of Internet Explorer). Once the "Settings" section is located, click the "Advanced" button.
  3. The title should now read "Advanced Privacy Settings." Be sure "Override automatic cookie handling" is checked. "First-part Cookies" must be set to "Accept" or "Prompt" and cookies subsequently accepted.
  4. Click the box to choose "Always allow session cookies."
  5. Select "OK."

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x
  1. In the Internet Explorer browser window, from the "Tools" menu select "Internet Options."
  2. Select the "Security" tab.
  3. Select the "Custom Level" button.
  4. Under the "cookies" heading, make sure the "allow cookies stored on your computer" option is enabled.
  5. Also under the "cookies" heading, make sure the "allow per-session cookies" option is enabled.
  6. Select "OK."

  1. In the Internet Explorer browser window, from the "View" menu select "Internet Options."
  2. Select the "Security" tab.
  3. Under the "cookies" heading, click Always accept cookie"; activate the items under Javascript or Scripting.
  4. Click "OK."

  1. In the Internet Explorer browser window, from the "View" menu select "Internet Options."
  2. Select the "Advanced" tab.
  3. In the "Warnings" section, make sure that "Warn before accepting cookies" is not checked, and activate the items under Javascript or Scripting.
  4. Click "OK."

Netscape 7.X
  1. Select "Edit" and then select "Preferences."
  2. Now click the arrow next to the "Privacy & Security" section.
  3. Click on the word "Cookies" in the menu that appears.
  4. Make sure the radio button "Enable all Cookies" is highlighted.
  5. To enable Javascript,click the arrow next to the word "Advanced."
  6. In the menu that appears left click on "Scripts & Plugins."
  7. In the window that appears make sure that the checkbox "Enable Javascript for Navigator" is checked.
  8. Click "OK" to exit this. Restart your Browser for this to take effect.

Macintosh systems using Internet Explorer 3.x or 4.x
  1. In the Internet Explorer browser window,under the Edit menu, select "Preferences."
  2. Under "Receiving Files", click "Cookies."
  3. For "When receiving cookies", select "never ask."
  4. Under "Web Browser" select "Web Content", in the Active Content box, make sure the check box next to ENABLE SCRIPTING is selected.
  5. Click "OK."
